Artist Statement
I chose to do the topic of mental health for my zine, specifically bad habits people do to cope with stress and anxiety. For my images I chose a specific order so that they all flow and relate to each other. My cover image is an image of a full battery labeled social battery, and the back cover has an image of a low battery with the caption, “Social battery low, please charge now”. I wanted this to represent how you start out feeling great and like you have a full battery but once these bad habits kick in and start becoming regular, it drains your battery until you feel empty and like you can’t do anything. The images start out with small things like missing assignments and binge drinking, which then leads to self-isolating by not answering your phone and not cleaning your room. The final two images are all the moods that you can swing through, out of the 9 there is only 1 happy one, the rest are more depressed moods, and the final image is a picture of a brain screaming “ahhhh fuck”. I felt like that represented when the whole world comes crashing down on you and your brain is just screaming.
