In this article, the artist Michael Green talks about how digital art is the new medium for our generation. He believes that we, as a society, have exhausted physical art forms and the new generation needs a new medium for their art. However, I do not agree with him. Yes, digital art encompasses the modern-day internet culture that we all take part in, but that does not mean all physical art forms are exhausted. Personally, I see new art pieces every day that continue to amaze and inspire me. On top of this, he claims that physical museums are dead, but I along with many others do enjoy walking around museums observing different pieces of art or flipping through books with art pieces in them. Yes, digital art does represent modern day culture and is something unique to our time period, but that does not mean that digital museums like Tumblr will completely replace their physical counterpart. In addition to this the article talked about how he is selling a GIF of Jeff Koons famous balloon dog that is deflating, but for $5,800. This is another reason why I don’t believe digital art should take over the entire art scene. I cannot comprehend spending that much money on a single GIF, I could see a company paying someone that much for a business-related task like rebranding a logo or animating a quick advertisement. However, for creative digital art I do not see how that is possible. Personally, I only use GIFs when texting friends, therefore I do not see how anyone would spend that much money for an intangible 3 second piece of art that would likely be stored away in their hard drive lost amongst files.
